Finally Home Program

greeNest's Finally Home Program is a unique local program that, for a small fee, provides household furnishings to individuals and families transitioning to sustainable housing.

We accept donations of gently used furnishings and household goods from individuals and organizations within Winston-Salem and the surrounding areas. Volunteers then sort, clean, and organize goods that the community has thoughtfully donated.

For a nominal fee, participants, accompanied by case managers from one of our partner agencies, will visit our showroom and choose the items that best suit their needs and preferences, thus providing dignity and prioritization skills.

greeNest has furnished over 2100 homes through our Finally Home Program since 2015!

Up Off the Floor Program

greeNest's Up Off the Floor Program provides new beds for children in Forsyth County, from birth to 18 years old. Partner agency case managers identify children sleeping on the floor or who do not have a safe sleeping space. greeNest supplies portable cribs and twin beds with new pillows and bedding at no cost to the family.

To achieve this, greeNest purchases compressed, new-in-box mattresses and compact metal platform frames so families can easily transport the beds without a specialty vehicle. We offer different bed-in-a-bag options for children and their parents to select their favorite bedding.

Since 2016, greeNest has gotten nearly 3000 children Up Off the Floor and into their own beds!

We rely heavily on individual financial donations to keep this program running. Please consider giving to keep our children Up Off the Floor!

Our Beginnings

For two sisters who grew up in a home where their resourceful mother invented the rubber band ball and a zip-lock bag was always reused; where Christmas bows showed up year after year (in great shape!), this undertaking was a natural fit! Factoring in the creative passion of an artist and the patience and energy of a high school history teacher, it became a match made in heaven.

Jan and Joanna began volunteering at an overflow homeless shelter at their church, where they met families who were doing everything they could to get back on their feet. They saw firsthand that even when families secured housing, they often had nothing to furnish their new homes. Wanting to help, they began gathering gently used household items from friends and family to meet this very real need.

Thanks to the inspiration of Beth Smoot (co-founder of The Green Chair Project in Raleigh), Jan and Joanna found their passion: to take the things that we all had been blessed with but could no longer put to good use—and put them to good use! Those in our community who were transitioning into sustainable housing could use our donated, gently used items to set up homes of their own. We gathered those things and organized them so that folks could come in and pick out what they loved. It was a win-win for everyone!
